Building community

BEING FAMILY, FINDING HOMES, DEVELOPING SKILLS

We believe that if we give an individual a home, empower them to develop skills and provide them with a family and a place to belong, they will find the confidence, the motivation and the hope for change

1. Church Shelter

First stage provision
The Starting Point

The Church Shelter is our starting point in building community. It provides a place of safety, rest and recuperation for rough sleepers. By ‘being family’ it becomes an incubator for forming relationships of trust with damaged individuals, encouraging them to take the first steps down a unified and mentored pathway out of homelessness.

Work experience / Volunteer programme

Our Rotary bus is operated with the same family culture as the shelter and combines overnight accommodation with some clinical space so that it doubles up as a health provision. It has 10 individual pod spaces with provision for pets incorporated. During the day it is also used as part of structured volunteering activities with mentors.

1. Church Shelter

First stage provision

Over and above just being a safe space for rest and recuperation. Beyond that, the Shelter’s success is driven by the fact that it is neutral ground which is deliberately operated as an ‘incubator’ for forming relationships. It is a fertile space for developing trust because the culture, which is carefully guarded, is one of being a ‘family’ for the guests.

2. Rotary Shelter Bus

Second stage provision

It will provide an additional 10 individual bed spaces which will be complementary to the shelter. The “accommodation” is in individual pods that will provide a small additional level of comfort. This will give incentive for people to take on additional responsibility through work experience and volunteer placements in order to develop skills. The aim is for them to look to move forwards towards finding a home.

4. Hope into Action: Black Country

Move on supported accommodation provider characterised by affordable rents

We believe that the role of the church in finding homes and being family for the homeless is essential. We would love to see every church supporting at least two people in a vulnerable situation (homeless or refugees), in suitable, quality, affordable accommodation.

We partner every house we open with a local church. We provide the technical housing expertise and our partner churches provide a sense of community, family, acceptance and love to the residents.

Shared accommodation at Local Housing Allowance rates in the private sector

We aim to make the transition between homeless services and finding a home in the community as smooth as possible.

Simultaneously we are seeking to address one of the biggest obstacles in homelessness and housing i,e, the shortage of available, affordable and sustainable homes for those who have journeyed along our pathway.
